Hello World? My 1st Shout Out!

in Blogging

“Hello World” was the first line of code I learned when I took C++ 12 years ago – “foo bar” was the second. The point of a beginner’s first coding exercise is to learn how to print something out to the screen, to learn the fundamental structure of that programming language.

Beginning programmers learn how to structure code for greater readability, how to make comments, how to optimize code so it’s not bloated.

Soooooooooooo…

“Hello World” in Thesis

This is my first blog post on DanaLookadoo.com.

I’m beginning to setup this blog, to structure the code, to improve the site’s readability, to learn how to format comments, to optimize for search engines, to load plugins and widgets without making it bloated.

I kept looking at the initial “Hello World” post that comes with WordPress.

“Welcome to WordPress. This is your first post. Edit or delete it, then start blogging!”

I decided to…

  • Edit “Hello World” rather than delete.
  • Make this site live and let you watch a work in progress.
  • Break all the rules I’ve followed for over a decade. I’m not going to spend hours planning, information architecture, design, copywriting and SEO.
  • Just get started sharing my new journey.

I FINALLY …

I FINALLY loaded WordPress 2.7 on my domain on March 15, 2009. I’ve been researching themes, plugins, deciding on voice, thinking about rebranding, etc.

I FINALLY decided to move away from Pixel Position as my primary brand.

I FINALLY purchased the Thesis theme. I’m not one to jump on a bandwagon because others are doing so. Thesis has been taking the WordPress community by storm. I knew it was “the bomb” for SEO. But so many of the sites look the same. Here’s a sample of unique sites that sold me:

Thesis Gallery Showcase with killer customizations from around the Thesis community!

The Thesis Theme from Chris Pearson and DIYthemesI studied and came to the strong conclusion that Thesis was my only choice. The code and interface is a lot like C++. It’s simple yet powerful, smart without being overly complex.

I FINALLY bought the developer’s version of Thesis. I have more sites to develop, after all.

Soooooooooooo…

Hello World!

This is my first shout out on Dana Lookadoo dot com.

Just like C++, if you’re seeing this mid March of 2009, the site is just about as basic as a “Hello World” screen print. Thesis may be a little more fun than C++, however, and I’ll share the journey with you.

Andrew,

What an honor to have you stop by, especially since there is nothing to see! Nice to hear from you and look forward to catching up.

New projects and priorities have taken precedence the last couple months. A couple sites are in the works, and I guess getting DanaLookadoo.com done first would be a good idea.

Big thanks for shouting out!
